Is it Right for My Patient?

"Is it right for my patient?" That’s the obvious question for any physician. Well, here are some things to consider:

  • Hospice allows patient to live their remaining days with comfort and dignity, among family and friends.
  • Hospice is about more than just a patient’s medical needs – emotional, social and spiritual needs of patients are just as important.
  • Hospice focuses on the care, not the cure – ensuring that a patient’s physical and emotional comfort are served while maintaining their quality of life for as long as they are able.
  • Hospice can provide support for family and friends through counseling and support groups.

"So how do I bring up the topic with my patient?" It's a relevant question - one your patient might have concerns about.

By having the conversation early, it allows patient to reflect on the possibility and get used to the idea. It’s also important that they realize some important things when considering hospice care:

  • It's a choice that the patient makes and no one else.
  • Hospice provides comprehensive care in a setting they select.
  • Hospice is about quality of life. It’s all about providing for patient needs and comfort.
  • As the primary care physician, you continue to be the patient’s doctor and to oversee patient care.
  • An interdisciplinary team of skilled specialists to cater to the needs of patient, family and friends.
  • Hospice care is a Medicare benefit that’s also covered by many private insurers.
  • Through our many benefactors hospice care is provided regardless of an individual’s ability to pay.
  • It’s something for the patient to consider if and when the time calls for it.
