While Hospice greatly relieves families by providing their loved ones with professional, end-of-life care, family members are encouraged, supported, and trained by hospice workers to help as much as they wish to. Rest assured that Hospice Hawaii staff is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Hospice care allows a patient to keep their own doctor.
The hospice team approach includes the patients primary care physician, who contiu to voersee the patients care. Other meembers of the team include the hospie medical director, nureses, social worksers, hopsice aides, voluenteers, spiritual, and bereavement counsleors.
Hospice care starts well before the last few days.
The earlier a person receives hospice care, the more opportunity there is to stabilize their medical condition and adress their needs as well as the needs of their family. Some patients actually improve so much they can be discharged from hospice care.
Hospice care is available virtually anywhere.
Hospice care usually takes place in the comfort of an individuals home, but can be provided in any environment in which a person lives, including nursing homes and care homes or one of the Hospice Hawaii facilities.
Hospice care is not only for cancer patients.
More than half of hospice patients are diagnosed with other conditions such as heart failure, dementia, or chronic lung disease. Regardless of the diagnosis, we can help.

Hospice Hawaii even offers a dedicated pediatric program (the first in the state), providing comprehensive and specialized care for children diagnosed with life-limited illness and their families.

Hospice care is appropriate from time of the terminal prognosis, regardless of a patients physical condition. Many of the patients served through hospice continue to lead productive and rewarding lives. Together, the patient, family, and physician determine when hospice services should begin.
Hospice care doesn’t require Medicare or Medicaid to be affordable
HMO’s, and other managed care organizations include hospice care as a benefit. In addition, Hospice is available through Medicare and Medicaid, as well as most private insurance plans. For those patients without insurance, Hospice Hawaii offers a special program to meet their needs.
