Grief and Loss

Grief is the natural human reaction to loss. Whether it is the loss of a spouse, a child, a parent, a sibling, or a close friend, grief can be an overwhelming sinking feeling that we are no longer in control. Family and friends want to help but sometimes are at a loss themselves to know what to say.

Finding a gentle, caring and supportive person can often be the beginning of healing. Hospice Hawaii can offer comfort and support during your time of grief.

The intensity and duration of grief, as well as some of the physical and emotional phenomena common to grieving, take many people by surprise, especially if this is the first time they have lost someone very dear to them. Although the emotions of grief can be very strong and although our behavior may seem a little strange to us and to others, that is only because our world has been knocked “off center,” and the vast majority of grieving people will recover without professional help or counseling.

What they may need is support and a sympathetic ear from someone who is not also grieving for the person who has died. Hospice Hawaii offers “friendly visits” from trained volunteers or from our Bereavement Counselor. They understand that it takes time to work through grief and are prepared to support in any way they can.
