Lucille Shreve
Lucille Shreve and her husband Nelson came to Kailua in the 1970s. Soon after their arrival, this creative duo brought energy and life to the Lanikai Mortgage Players, a volunteer-run organization dedicated to paying off the mortgage on their local park. Their mutual love for theatre motivated Lucille and Nelson to assist in the creation and production of over 25 melodramas performed by the Lanikai Mortgage Players. Proceeds from the performances helped to settle the mortgage and then to maintain the park for future performances. The Shreves’ giving did not end with theatre.
According to Nelson’s wishes, Hospice Hawaii was called upon to care for him at his home during his final days. Grateful for their commitment to “go wherever a patient calls home,” Lucille also called upon Hospice Hawaii when she needed care. For Lucille, giving through her estate to Hospice Hawaii was a perfect way to pay tribute to her husband and the care they both received.
The Koyanagi’s
Lief and Charlotte Koyanagi are long-time residents of Wahiawa. While retired now, they both have had successful and long careers – Lief as an engineer and Charlotte as an elementary school teacher. Together they raised two sons and today they enjoy spoiling their first grandchild. But what makes the Koyanagi’s truly special in the eyes of Hospice Hawaii is that they were among the very first to fund a charitable gift annuity with us. This gift represents the belief the Koyanagi’s have in the benefits of hospice care. As Lief explains “Charlotte’s cousin received hospice care some years back. When we visited him, we were astounded to see the change in him – he was well-composed, accepting, and beyond fear. Everyone is afraid of dying. But hospice care was able to affect him in a positive way and make him feel good about himself, even approaching the final stages of life. That is a very special gift to give someone.”
Gift annuities help provide the resources Hospice Hawaii needs to give that gift to others. With a gift annuity, donors make a gift of cash or securities and in return receive fixed payments for life. Then whatever remains of their contribution is used for the purpose they designate. Funding a gift annuity may actually increase your cash flow and help provide lifetime security. In the case of the Koyanagi’s they will receive annuity payments (backed by the assets of Hospice Hawaii) over both of their lifetimes. Lief explains their motivation in making the gift this way: “We’ve heard good things about what Hospice Hawaii does. A charitable gift annuity is a neat way to donate and receive some money back in return.”
